Male Life Hexagram Calculation Formula:

  1. First, add together the four digits of the year of birth.
  2. If the sum is less than 9, subtract this number from 11 to determine the life hexagram.
  3. If the sum is greater than 9, add the unit digit and the tens digit together again, then subtract this new sum from 11 to determine the life hexagram.
  4. If the result is still greater than 9, subtract 9 from it, and the remainder is the life hexagram.

Example:

For a male born in 1982, 1+9+8+2=20, 2+0=2, 11-2=9.

9 belongs to Li, indicating that this male has the Li life hexagram.

Female Life Hexagram Calculation Formula:

  1. First, add together the four digits of the year of birth.
  2. If the sum is less than 9, add 4 to it. If this new sum is greater than 9, subtract 9 to determine the life hexagram. If less than 9, the sum after adding 4 is the life hexagram.
  3. If the sum is greater than 9, add the unit digit and the tens digit together again, then add 4 to this sum. If the new sum is greater than 9, subtract 9 from it, and the remainder is the life hexagram.

Example:

For a female born in 1989.

1+9+8+9=27, 2+7=9, 9+4=13, 13-9=4.

4 belongs to Xun, indicating that this female has the Xun life hexagram.

Life hexagrams are divided into eight types, namely: Kan, Kun, Zhen, Xun, Qian, Dui, Gen, Li. One belongs to Kan, two to Kun, three to Zhen, four to Xun, six to Qian, seven to Dui, eight to Gen, nine to Li. Males with a remainder of five are considered Kun, and females as Gen. Thus, according to the Nine Stars, the eight life hexagrams are also known as: one white Kan, two black Kun, three cyan Zhen, four green Xun, six white Qian, seven red Dui, eight white Gen, nine purple Li.

In the Ba Zhai method, Eastern Four Life refers to life hexagrams belonging to Zhen, Xun, Li, Kan; and Western Four Life hexagrams include: Kun, Dui, Qian, Gen.

Life hexagrams correspond to their elements in Feng Shui, known as Life Hexagram Five Elements, namely: Qian (Metal), Dui (Metal), Li (Fire), Zhen (Wood), Xun (Wood), Kan (Water), Gen (Earth), Kun (Earth).
