Bazi chart construction, also known as plotting the Major Cycles, is the first step after establishing the Four Pillars. Understanding Bazi, with its high entry barrier, is contingent on a comprehension of setting up the Four Pillars.

For further reading: How to Establish the Four Pillars.

  1. What are Yin and Yang Years?

In the Jia Zi calendar, years are calculated using the combination of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, for example, 2016 is a Bing Shen year, where Bing is the Heavenly Stem, and Shen is the Earthly Branch. Determining whether it’s a Yin or Yang year is based on the Yin or Yang nature of the year’s Heavenly Stem. The Yin Heavenly Stems are Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui; the Yang Heavenly Stems are Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren. Thus, Bing, being Yang, makes 2016, a Bing Shen year, a Yang year.

  1. What is Reverse Ordering of the Major Cycles? How is it done?

The prerequisite for plotting the Major Cycles is knowing the normal order of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches.

The order of the Heavenly Stems is: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui.

The order of the Earthly Branches is: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai.

Additionally, men are considered Yang and women Yin. If the gender’s Yin or Yang matches the Yin or Yang of the year’s Heavenly Stem, then the Major Cycles proceed in sequential order; if they are of opposite natures, then the Major Cycles are in reverse order.

Sequential ordering follows the aforementioned order, whereas reverse ordering proceeds in the opposite direction.

The Major Cycles are plotted based on the Month Pillar, illustrated with an example:

A male born on April 8, 1990, at 6 AM has the Bazi chart: Geng Wu, Geng Chen, Gui Mao, Yi Mao.

The Month Pillar is Geng Chen. 1990 is a Geng Wu year, a Yang year. Therefore, for a Yang year male birth, the Major Cycles are plotted in sequential order, starting with Geng and Chen in the sequence: Xin, Ren, Gui, Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu; from Chen in sequence: Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi. The plotted Major Cycles are: Xin Si, Ren Wu, Gui Wei, Jia Shen, Yi You, Bing Xu, Ding Hai, Wu Zi.

For the same birth date but a female, being a Yang year female birth, the Major Cycles are plotted in reverse order, still resulting in the Bazi chart: Geng Wu, Geng Chen, Gui Mao, Yi Mao.

In reverse order from Geng: Ji, Wu, Ding, Bing, Yi, Jia, Gui, Ren; from Chen in reverse: Mao, Yin, Chou, Zi, Hai, Xu, You, Shen. The plotted Major Cycles are: Ji Mao, Wu Yin, Ding Chou, Bing Zi, Yi Hai, Jia Xu, Gui You, Ren Shen.

Let’s also consider a Yin year example:

A female born on July 18, 1997, at 11 AM, has the Bazi chart: Ding Chou, Ding Wei, Xin You, Jia Wu.

1997 is a Ding Chou year, a Yin year. Hence, for a Yin year female birth, the Major Cycles are plotted in sequential order, with the Month Pillar Ding Wei starting from Ding in the sequence: Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui, Jia, Yi; from Wei in sequence: Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao. The plotted Major Cycles are: Wu Shen, Ji You, Geng Xu, Xin Hai, Ren Zi, Gui Chou, Jia Yin, Yi Mao.

For the same birth details but a male, being a Yin year male birth, the Major Cycles are plotted in reverse order, with the Bazi chart still as: Ding Chou, Ding Wei, Xin You, Jia Wu.

In reverse order from Ding: Bing, Yi, Jia, Gui, Ren, Xin, Geng, Ji; from Wei in reverse: Wu, Si, Chen, Mao, Yin, Chou, Zi, Hai. The plotted Major Cycles are: Bing Wu, Yi Si, Jia Chen, Gui Mao, Ren Yin, Xin Chou, Geng Zi, Ji Hai.

Additionally, the ages represented by each of the plotted Major Cycles are crucial, involving a new concept known as “Juvenile Limit”. For further reading: What is the Juvenile Limit? When Does It Start?
