FengShui, an ancient Chinese philosophical concept meaning “wind-water,” refers to the conscious occupation and harmonization of space. It seeks to bring positive energy and impactful transformation to those occupying any given space globally by balancing both Yin (passive dark female energies) and Yang (active bright male energies) energies – representing duality as found within nature itself.

Feng Shui has an ancient history dating back more than three millennia, interweaved with Chinese astrology and metaphysics. Scholars also find evidence of its significance within Taoism and Buddhism – two ancient belief systems with deep-seated traditions rooted in FengShui.

FengShui and the Chinese Compass

Believed to harness invisible forces around us, FengShui gave rise to the Luopan, or magnetic compass, used initially for divination but adopted for navigation during Song Dynasty navigational practice in 11th century China. Now used by FengShui practitioners worldwide to optimize object placements.

FengShui in Tomb Location

Since as early as the Zhou Dynasty (1122 BCE), FengShui has been used to select suitable burial sites, a practice still practiced today. Leaning against mountains and facing waters are considered key principles when selecting auspicious spots which will impact future generations’ fortunes positively.

FengShui in Construction

FengShui determines the ideal locations and layouts of buildings and gardens, such as The Forbidden City with its symmetric design and auspicious south entrance as an example of its use in traditional architecture; classical Chinese gardens in Suzhou reflect this influence in landscaping design as well.

Modern Practice of FengShui

Feng Shui is still widely practiced today, from tomb placement and building design, interior decoration and professional Feng Shui master consultation services. These professionals are adept at optimizing spaces to bring good luck and harmony.

FengShui in Skyscraper Design

Modern architecture often incorporates FengShui principles, which can be seen in iconic structures like Hong Kong’s HSBC Building and Bank of China Tower, where their principles are believed to attract abundant energy and ensure smooth business operations.

FengShui Is an International Trend

FengShui’s minimalist aesthetic resonates globally, shaping how people use their spaces and emphasizing its role in emotional regulation and relaxation.

Applying FengShui principles to interior design

Using methods such as the Bagua energy map and command position optimizes energy flows within living spaces for improved well-being and enhanced well-being.

Laying the Bagua Map

In multi-level structures, applying a Bagua map requires layer by layer application beginning with primary rooms or areas. Once applied, its various zones correspond with specific aspects of life: for instance: fertility and emotional wellness.

  • Li (South): represents fire element, fame and reputation and red color as its representation; symbolised by trigram.
  • Kun (Southwest): Earth element representing love partnerships represented by pink color trigram; while Dui (West), Metal element representing children creativity represented by white trigram is for Dui.
  • Qian (Northwest): Metal element and travel, represented by gray color and the trigram.
  • Kan (North): Water element associated with career/life path development represented by black color and its trigram.
  • Gen (Northeast): Earth element representing knowledge and self-cultivation, distinguished by deep blue hue and the trigram.
  • Zhen (East): Wood element representing family life and health represented by green, blue, and cyan colors as well as its trigram.
  • Xun (Southeast): Wood element represents wealth, symbolised by purple colour and trigram.

The Command Position

An integral element of FengShui, the command position consists of placing key furniture items – like beds and desks – diagonally opposite but facing towards an entranceway for optimal handling of opportunities or challenges that come their way.

FengShui Examples for Bedrooms

By applying these principles, one can optimize a bedroom in the eastern (Zhen) zone with green and blue elements as well as wood elements like bonsai trees or bamboo plants for better feng shui.

Feng Shui uses five elements – wood, fire, earth, metal and water – as the basis of its practice, providing an easy way to adjust any room’s energy.

FengShui’s Broader Appeal

Beyond space harmonization, FengShui promotes mindfulness and alignment with our environment by acknowledging subtle energies and metaphysical elements which affect daily lives.
